Where to start...

Many people I meet that either have a child with Autism (or Asperger's or ADD or ADHD or any number of other difficulties) want to know the best way to get started on this path of healing for their child (children).

One of the best websites I have found is: www.tacanow.com

Although it is specifically a group based in Southern California, their website is a treasure trove of information about autism, diet, etc. Look especially at the "how to get started" page. They recommend a ten week process for getting on the diet. I wish that I had known this information when we got started. I think things would have been much less frustrating.

One word of warning... depending on how much of a picky eater your child is, getting up to speed on the diet can be a bit expensive as you purchase and try various products and find that many just don't taste good at all.

Here is a list of some of our favorites (and we are VERY picky eaters!):

Kinnickkinnick Breads - This is a company based in Canada that makes gfcf bread, cookies, donuts, bagels, cake mixes, etc. Everything we tried of theirs was great. I found out that you can order directly from the bakery. They bake on Monday, ship on Tuesday and you get boxes of freshly baked gf bread on your doorstep on Wednesday (usually).

EnviroKids - This is a company that makes kid friendly (GFCF) cereals and breakfast bars. Again, everything we tried from them has been great. Our small health food store carries their products and they are also available in the bigger chain stores like Whole Foods Markets, etc.

Ians All Natural and Organic Food for Kids. A huge variety of fun, convenient food that is gluten/casein free (also free of many other allergens). http://www.iansnaturalfoods.com/

One more thing for now... we really like De Boles gluten-free corn spaghetti style pasta. We had tried some rice pastas and didn't care for them as much.

There are some products that you can still purchase in the regular grocery store... but I usually call the 1-800 information line just to confirm that the product is gfcf.

Well, that's all for now. I will add more next time about some cookbooks and recipes that we have had success with.

GC I enjoyed reading your blog, it reminded me of our son who is 8 years old now. I had my wife read the information on the diets, problem is my son with ASD is a very very picky eater.
I started a blog for one of my college classes and I made one about ASD, mainly I guess as an outlet. The site is http://asd-autismspectrumdisorder.blogspot.com/
Thanks for sharing your story. Have you ever been to what kind of world do you want.com? The site has to do with donations and lets people post picture slide video's. We posted this morning and I know 8 hours later over 130 people had visited the page....wow!
